Are you feeling pro today?  Gotta say, it’s always fun to paint, whether that’s for your next home makeover or for another painting project outside.  But in every project, cleaning always comes after.  There’s always a choice of replacing your things once you can no longer use them, but if you still can, and have the power to prolong their lifespan, why not?  It’s always best to save time and money by properly cleaning and reusing your paint roller tray.  Believe it or not, it makes you efficient and ensures that your next project starts off on the right foot.  So how do you do it?  Here’s a step-by-step guide on how you can clean and reuse your paint roller tray like a pro.

Things that you need:

  • Materials:
    • Warm, soapy water (for latex paint)
    • Mineral spirits or paint thinner (for oil-based paint)
    • Rags or paper towels
    • Putty knife or 5-in-1 tool
    • Plastic container for disposal
  • Safety Gear:
    • Rubber gloves
    • Safety glasses (when using solvents)

Step-by-step by Step Cleaning Process

1. Remove Excess Paint

Before anything else, you have to scrape out as much excess paint as possible first.  Then use a putty knife or a 5-in-1 tool to gently scrape the tray.  Trust me, this makes the cleaning process so much easier.  You can also return the collected leftover paint to the can afterwards.

2. Choose Your Cleaning Method

For Latex Paint:

  • First, you have to fill a bucket with warm, soapy water.  Then use a mild dish detergent as this is effective in breaking down paint residues.
  • Next, submerge the tray in the soapy water and let it soak for a few minutes.  Any stubborn paint that’s stuck on it will slowly loosen.

For Oil-Based Paint:

  • With oil-based paint, use mineral spirits or paint thinner in a well-ventilated area.  Pour a small amount of it into the tray and use a rag to wipe the paint away.  This is paint thinner we’re talking about, so make sure you wear gloves and goggles to protect you from these harmful fumes and possible skin irritation.

3. Scrub the Tray

For scrubbing, use firm bristles or a scrubbing pad.  Make sure to include the corners and grooves where paint tends to build up.  We don’t want to leave that, don’t we?  And although for latex paint, rinsing might be enough, but for oil-based paint, you might need to repeat the solvent application just to make sure all residue is removed.  Speaking of solvent, safety first always!  Don’t let the solvent sting you.

4. Rinse and Dry

For Latex Paint:

  • Soap might affect your future paint applications if not removed, so rinse your trays thoroughly with clean water.
  • Then, shake off excess water and place the tray upside down on a clean surface.  This is to air dry it completely.

For Oil-Based Paint:

  • For oil-based paint, after scrubbing, wipe down the tray with a clean rag to remove any remaining solvent and paint.  Then, dispose of the used solvent according to local regulations; it’s usually by letting it evaporate or pouring it into a designated disposal container.

5. Store Properly

And then you’re done!  You can now store it in a dry place to avoid dust and debris.  If you’re up for it, you can also wrap it in a plastic bag or cover it with a cloth to keep it clean.  Happy painting!
